The Ultimate Guide to Cartomancy
Cartomancy is a form of divination that uses a standard deck of 52 playing cards. Each card is interpreted through several layers: polarity (Red or Black), the theme of its suit (Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs, or Spades), and its value (Ace, Two, Three…). Together, these elements shape the card’s meaning. When multiple cards appear in a reading, their meanings influence one another, intensifying, softening, or shifting the interpretation.
I created this website to make cartomancy easy to learn, alongside a cartomancy x oracle hybrid deck designed to make the system more visually intuitive.
The 3 Pillars of Cartomancy
To understand cartomancy, there are three core elements to learn: polarity, suits, and values.
1. The Polarity
Relationships & Feeling
Hearts relate to the emotional side of life, the bonds and feelings that give it meaning and depth. This suit encompasses friendship, love, intimacy, compassion, and emotional truth. Themes of vulnerability, affection, honesty, and human connection run throughout.
Money & Thinking
Diamonds reflect the material world, the structures, resources, and responsibilities that underpin daily life. They relate to finances and the practical decisions that shape your circumstances and security, but also the mindset behind them: the thoughts, habits, and judgements that determine what you build from what you have.
Work & Doing
Clubs are generally more neutral than negative, and relate to work, action, and personal drive. They represent creativity, motivation, endurance, and the force of will that propels things into motion. This suit centres on effort, initiative, discipline, and the pursuit of goals through sustained action and daily responsibilities.
Challenges & Learning
Spades delve into challenge, adversity, and the hidden workings of the mind. They bring clarity through conflict, transformation through difficulty, and insight through change. This suit speaks to perspective, awareness, and the necessity of confronting uncomfortable truths.
3. The Values
Aces represent beginnings, potential, and the first spark of a new cycle, opportunity, or direction.
Twos symbolise partnerships, balance, and the interaction between people, choices, or opposing forces.
Threes indicate growth, expansion, and creativity, marking the early development of an idea, project, or relationship.
Fours reflect stability, stillness, structure, and the establishment of secure foundations, routines, or boundaries.
Fives embody freedom, change, and the urge to break away from limitations or explore new possibilities.
Sixes relate to harmony, responsibility, and the restoration of balance through care, support, and conscious choice.
Sevens signify introspection, uncertainty, and a deeper search for meaning, awareness, or personal truth.
Eights convey power, ambition, momentum, and the ability to influence outcomes through focus and determination.
Nines suggest change, transition, and the nearing completion of an important cycle or phase of growth.
Tens capture endings, completion, and the fulfilment of a cycle before renewal begins.
Jacks announce messages, discovery, and new developments, often carrying youthful or restless energy.
Queens express femininity, intuition, emotional wisdom, and the deeper understanding that comes through awareness.
Kings channel masculinity, authority, leadership, and the confident direction of power and responsibility.
Jokers reveal the unexpected, sudden shifts, and the unpredictable turns of fate beyond ordinary control.
